Plastic or polyester is designed for anyone who rolls the ball straight. Also works great for more advance bowlers looking to increase their spare shooting. Plastic balls have nothing in the cover of the ball to grip the lanes so the ball will just skid down the lanes.

Urethane is designed to grip the lanes and create a small amount of friction. The friction will help the ball roll more down the lane than skid like the plastic balls. These bowling balls can hook, but are more outdated with modern surface.

Modern surfaces are made out of Resin; these different resin materials mixed together create a ton more friction as they are rolled down the lanes. Rotating the resin bowling ball with the added friction you will see a noticeable increase in hook potential.
